At the moment the market for Oracle and IT in general is weak and salaries have dropped; if you are an IT professional (UNIX system manager, Oracle DBA) a salary in Zurich could be around 110.000 CHF - 115.000 CHF a year (something like 92.000$). Other good cities are Basel and Bern; in the French part salaries are lower.

Good employers have traditionally been the banks, but the UBS has been cutting jobs and lowering the salaries.

Job permit and languages

A valid job permit is compulsory; the company applies for it and it is valid for the canton. The first job permit (type B) is valid for one year and can be (normally easily) renewed; after five years one is entitled to a permit C, which is valid for the whole Confederation and doesn’t expire, unless you leave the country. Getting a permit is getting more and more difficult for people from most countries, except from the European Union.

In IT companies in the German part one can normally get by with English, even if German is of course a big advantage.
